Ice House, The (1997)(DVD)

Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) stars in one of his earliest roles in this adaptation of award-winning crime novelist Minette Walters’ literary debut. Ten years ago, Phoebe Maybury's hateful husband David disappeared from Streech Grange. Now a naked, unidentifiable corpse has been discovered in the icehouse on the Grange, and Inspectors Walsh (Corin Redgrave, Foyle's War, The Forsyte Saga) and McLoughlin (Craig) have to decide whose it is, whether he was murdered, and who killed him.

Years before he became James Bond, Daniel Craig played a cynical Scottish detective in this BBC adaptation of the Minette Walters bestseller. Craig's Sergeant McLoughlin is still smarting from the dissolution of his marriage when a handyman discovers a badly decomposed body in the Maybury family's abandoned ice house. McLoughlin's superior, Chief Inspector Walsh (Corin Redgrave with ever-present sneer), suspects it may be David Maybury, whose disappearance he investigated nine years ago. Now Maybury's wife, Phoebe (Penny Downie), shares their Hampshire mansion with two women who are believed to be lesbians, Diana Goode (Frances Barber) and Anne Cattrell (Kitty Aldridge), who takes an immediate dislike to McLoughlin, dismissing him as a "sanctimonious little git," but their encounters suggest a certain sexual attraction on his part. As the detectives gather information about Phoebe, her friends, and her children, Jane (Alexandra Milman) and Jon (Cloud Atlas's James D'Arcy), everyone emerges as a potential suspect--even Phillips (Dave Hill), the handyman. Though her husband had a reputation for abuse, Phoebe's small-minded, homophobic neighbors believe she injured herself to make him look bad, but the truth is far trickier. If his accent can be inconsistent, Craig is otherwise effective, an attribute that extends to the rest of the fine cast. With a smattering of profanity and disturbing imagery, The Ice House is grittier than your average made-for-TV mystery; more David Fincher than Agatha Christie. The two-part movie comes complete with a profile of Walters, who was working on her seventh novel at the time. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

"The Ice House" is a surprising good television murder mystery from the BBC. It features very solid performances by Corin Redgrave and a young Daniel Craig as Inspector Walsh and Detective Sergeant McLoughlin, assigned to investigate the mystery of a dead body found in a disused ice house at Streech Grange. The Grange is inhabited by a Mrs. Maybury, whose husband mysteriously went missing nine years previously. Inspector Walsh immediately suspects the body is that the missing David Maybury, whom he further suspects was murdered by his wife.

However, nothing in this three hour crime drama is simple. Not the identifying of the body, nor the cause of death, nor how it came to be in the icehouse, nor especially, who done it. The movie, based on a novel by Minette Walters, manages to make a suspect out of practically the entire cast, including the nearby villagers. The solution will be a while in coming, and may surprise all but the most acute viewers. Along the way, Daniel Craig is quietly compelling as a dutiful Scottish cop with a dying marriage, an alcohol problem, and an unexpected attraction to one of the suspects. Recommended as an entertaining mystery movie.

Are we Jaded? Rate this product. . . We EXPECT what we purchases to BE. To work without difficulty, without oops, without interruptions, to provide the intended use. When we receive and get the EXPECTED, we might sigh a sigh of satisfaction. More often we might not even raise an eye brow. Then we do not give of that satisfaction to the seller for providing so much to our enjoyment.
This movie was checked to be in excellent condition and valued to be Worth a price and worthy of giving entertainment.
This movie was packaged securely to survive the transportation from safe storage to me.
This movie was sent with confidence that it would arrive into my care quickly and safely.
All this required a seller that paid attention to basic details, that produced a successful transaction for both the seller and the buyer.
This brings buyers back to sellers again and again.
I am a happy buyer and look forward to doing business with this seller again.

When I first saw this film when it was shown originally on PBS, I was completely entranced. It was so different from anything else out there. I loved it. Unfortunately, the current version of this movie offered on Amazon has been edited in some very strange ways. There are major parts missing! I'm not sure why it was edited, just that is was done at some point. Why on earth do they do this to wonderful movies? This was a perfect film in its original version. What is currently available is a sorry excuse for a great film. I wish It was offered un-cut.

This was a most entertaining DVD. It was a bit long and seemed if it was a made for TV special. Actually, it was in two parts which provided a refreshing break. The subject was a body found in an underground ice house. The mystery was whodunit. The likely suspects were all involved to some degree as they were seemingly living as a lesbian threesome and scorned by the local villagers. The story unfolded with all sorts of twists and turns, new developments, and enlightening forensic evidence that was only forthcoming at critical times in the story. There was a bit of romance between the suspect and investigating detective that made for an interesting story by itself. I felt like this was a pilot movie of a series that might be scheduled to follow. There were certainly many follow up stories that could be made. I was glad that I found this DVD and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys British mysteries.

Great Britain has a good group of working actors, and you can count on them to deliver interesting, spot-on characters. The viewer is introduced to a bucolic setting, with three women doing various activities around a table. This quiet scene is changed abruptly with a man running towards the ladies, huffing, puffing, with a terrified purpose. The story begins, like many mysteries, with a body being stumbled upon in surprise, leading to a tightly wound knot of characters, various individual stories and a rambling country house, which also becomes a character in this mystery.
The viewer is introduced to people who may, or may not, have information regarding the body, and an inspector determined to push his theory forward for his reputation. Visits to the local bar, relationships changing, much lying and digging for evidence ensues. Viewers are shown various large groups of policemen searching, digging, moving about, making you wonder just what they expect to find.
Sexual preferences are brought to the front, giving the town's residences an excuse to voice feelings, fear and to act upon these opinions and beliefs.
Daniel Craig's character, a police detective, enters verbal dueling matches with one of the women living at the country house (who bests him at every turn) providing the possible "love-hate" interest.
The three women constantly give each other knowing looks, hushed before they finish their conversations, going to their favorite corners to sit and wait in angst. We are also treated to an interesting side story of the staff at this house, adding to the plot what-ifs.
Some of you may figure out everything easily, but I think there are enough plot twists to fool many, making this fun until the end, along with the addition of the mini plots among the citizens.

Dark and brooding,. Not the Daniel Craig of the James Bond series but a true jobbing actor filling the part and sharing the load with an impressive cast. A good enough story to keep you involved and clear characters that you can feel you know. But do you? That's the mystery.
